Who we are

This website, bicwny.com, is operated by Bodhi Institute of Compassion and Wisdom, New York (BICW NY) (纽约佛学会), a U.S. 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. If you have any questions about this policy, please email admission@bicwny.com.

Browsing the website

You do not need to register to browse courses, lecture texts, audio, or video. We use Google Analytics and Vercel Web Analytics to understand overall site usage, such as which pages are visited, whether visitors use a phone or a computer, and their general region. These statistics do not include your name or email. Google Analytics anonymizes IP addresses and may set cookies in your browser.

Signing up for classes

When you fill out our sign-up form, we collect what you enter: name, email, phone number, region, Buddhist study experience, reasons for joining, classes of interest, preferred contact methods and times, how you heard about us, the person who referred you, and your message.

• Purpose: to contact you and help arrange suitable classes.
• It is stored in our database and an internal spreadsheet, visible only to the volunteers who handle sign-ups.
• We send a confirmation email to your address.
• Your email is added to our weekly newsletter. Every newsletter includes an unsubscribe link, and once you unsubscribe we will not add you back.
• To prevent spam, the form uses Cloudflare Turnstile verification.

Member accounts

Signing in to the member area requires an email address (a password is optional). The name, Dharma name, phone number, and referrer you enter in your profile are used by our organization to stay in touch with and support students. Notes and highlights you make on lecture texts are visible only to you. We never publish any student's real name on the website.

Corrections and site search

When you submit a correction, we keep only what you write and do not record who you are. Site search records search terms to improve results; these are not linked to any personal identity.

Embedded videos

Videos on this site are played by YouTube in privacy-enhanced mode. When you play a video, the Google Privacy Policy applies.

Our YouTube channel management tool

We use YouTube API Services through an internal-only tool to manage our own YouTube channel, for example to publish videos and organize playlists. The tool only reads and changes videos and playlists on our own channel. It does not access or collect any data about viewers or other channels. Use of this tool is subject to the YouTube Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy. The authorizing account can revoke access at any time on the Google Account third-party access page.

What we do not do

• We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information.
• We do not use your information for advertising.
• We do not publish students' real names or contact details on the website.

Service providers

To run the website we use the following providers, which process data only on our instructions: Supabase (database and sign-in), Vercel (hosting and analytics), Google (Analytics, Sheets, Fonts, YouTube), Cloudflare (verification and audio storage), Resend (confirmation emails), and Amazon SES (weekly newsletter delivery).

Retention and deletion

We keep your information for as long as we provide study services to you. You may email admission@bicwny.com at any time to view, correct, or delete your information, or to delete your member account.

Children

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. For children's classes, a parent or guardian should complete the sign-up.
